How the lists work

Each list starts from every part in our database, keeps the ones that match a filter (a brand, a socket, a price limit or a memory size) and ranks them by our performance index. The first row is the fastest part that passes the filter. A second figure, index points per $100 of launch price, shows which part gives the most speed for the money.

The index is our own estimate of gaming performance. It is good for telling a fast part from a slow one and not for telling two close parts apart, because two parts within about 5% of each other can swap places in a game.

Choosing a part

Start with the graphics card, because it sets the frame rate in most games. Pick the list for your resolution and budget, then check that the processor does not hold the card back. The bottleneck calculator does that for any pair, and Rate my PC shows where a whole PC stands.

If you already have a PC, the upgrade advisor ranks the cards that would be a real step up from yours, by speed gained per dollar.

Questions

How are these lists ranked?

By our performance index, which is our own estimate of gaming speed. Each list applies a filter first, such as the brand, the socket or the launch price, and then ranks the parts that pass.

Are the prices current?

No. They are launch prices in US dollars. Shelf prices move, so check current listings before you buy.

Where is the full ranking?

The GPU tier list and the CPU tier list rank every part we cover, from S tier down to E.
