Gaming index (Ryzen 7 9800X3D = 100) against the processors closest to it.
The Ryzen 9 9950X scores 85 on our gaming index, where the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is 100. That puts it #8 of 239 processors we track, in S tier. It is among the fastest chips for gaming, and the graphics card will be the limit in nearly every game.
It has 16 cores and 32 threads, boosting to 5.7 GHz. That is more cores than games use; the extra ones help with video editing, streaming while you play and heavy multitasking.
The Ryzen 9 9950X uses the AM5 socket, so it fits motherboards with that socket. The fastest chips we track on the same socket are Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which would be a drop-in upgrade without changing the motherboard.
It is rated at 170 W. Intel and AMD chips at this level draw well above their rating when they boost, so budget for a good tower cooler or a 240 mm liquid cooler and a power supply with headroom.
At 1080p, where the processor matters most, the Ryzen 9 9950X can feed a card up to the GeForce RTX 5080 before it starts to hold the card back by more than 10 percent. At 1440p the limit moves to the GeForce RTX 4090. At 4K, where the card does most of the work, it can keep up with the GeForce RTX 5090.
