The Ryzen 5 8600G scores 62 on our gaming index, where the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is 100. That puts it #54 of 239 processors we track, in B tier. It is a solid mid-range gaming chip that pairs well with mid-range cards, and with faster cards at 1440p and 4K.
It has 6 cores and 12 threads, boosting to 5 GHz. Six cores is enough for almost every game, though it is the minimum you want for new releases.
The Ryzen 5 8600G uses the AM5 socket, so it fits motherboards with that socket. The fastest chips we track on the same socket are Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which would be a drop-in upgrade without changing the motherboard.
It is rated at 65 W. That is easy to cool; a decent tower cooler is enough, and the box cooler works on some models.
At 1080p, where the processor matters most, the Ryzen 5 8600G can feed a card up to the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti before it starts to hold the card back by more than 10 percent. At 1440p the limit moves to the GeForce RTX 5080. At 4K, where the card does most of the work, it can keep up with the GeForce RTX 4090.
