The Core i5-12600K scores 66 on our gaming index, where the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is 100. That puts it #45 of 239 processors we track, in B tier. It is a strong gaming chip. Only the very fastest graphics cards at 1080p will wait on it.
It has 10 cores and 16 threads, boosting to 4.9 GHz. Eight cores is the comfortable amount for gaming today, with room for background programs.
The Core i5-12600K uses the LGA1700 socket, so it fits motherboards with that socket. The fastest chips we track on the same socket are Core i9-14900K and Core i9-13900K, which would be a drop-in upgrade without changing the motherboard.
It is rated at 125 W. Intel and AMD chips at this level draw well above their rating when they boost, so budget for a good tower cooler or a 240 mm liquid cooler and a power supply with headroom.
At 1080p, where the processor matters most, the Core i5-12600K can feed a card up to the Radeon RX 9070 before it starts to hold the card back by more than 10 percent. At 1440p the limit moves to the GeForce RTX 5080. At 4K, where the card does most of the work, it can keep up with the GeForce RTX 5090.
